COVID-19:  Neighbors Helping Neighbors

One of the things that makes living in northwest Missouri so special is knowing that when there is a need to be met, neighbors come forward to help each other.  As a result, Mosaic Life Care Foundation has dedicated this webpage in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Donate Items

We are currently accepting homemade face masks.  Please see the information below for sewing requirements and drop off locations. For all other item donations, we encourage you to call the Help Me Hotline (816) 364-1131 or local social service agencies.  It is our desire to see these items get to those who are most in need across our region.

Homemade Masks

Homemade face masks will be distributed to the area of highest need within the Mosaic service region.

Mosaic Life Care has received an outpouring of generous responses from community members wanting to help by sewing fabric face masks. While fabric face masks are not to be used in the care of COVID-19 patients, according to the CDC, fabric face masks are a crisis response option when other supplies have been exhausted. Fabric face masks can also be helpful in other areas of patient care as supplies of personal protective (PPE) equipment are depleted.

Mosaic currently has a sufficient amount of PPE and will continue to work to provide for the safety of our patients and caregivers.

  • Please see how-to instructions below.
  • When your masks are complete, please deliver to one of our drop-off sites:
    • St. Joseph: Mosaic Life Care Foundation 518 S. 6th St. St. Joseph, MO 64501
    • Maryville: Mosaic Medical Building – Maryville 2024 S. Main St. Maryville, MO 64468
    • Albany: Drop box at: 402 E. Hwy 136 Albany, MO 64402 (Formerly Dr. Jackie Miller’s office)
  • For questions, please contact Sybil Hillyard at Mosaic Life Care Foundation: 816-271-7571 or Sybil.Hillyard@mlcfoundation.com
  • Collected masks will be immediately sent to Mosaic Linen Services for processing, sterilization and prepared for use.
  • Mosaic intends to use these masks for patient use at this time. However, with the ever-changing landscape of COVID-19, fabric mask use could change.
  • Any surplus masks may be distributed to other community organizations in need.

Making Face Masks for COVID-19

You can create a face mask without sowing. What you will need:

  • Coffee filter
  • Rubber bands (or hair ties)
  1. Lay your bandana face down and cut coffee filter in half
  2. Fold the top down to the center
  3. Fold the bottom up to the center
  4. Place coffee filter in center of bandana
  5. Flip the bandana over and fold the top to the center
  6. Fold the bottom to the center
  7. Slide hair tie onto each end of bandana, one per side (1/4 way in from each side)
  8. Fold outer sides of bandana to center and tuck under hair ties

How to make a face mask.  What you will need:

  • Cotton fabric, tightly woven
  • Rope elastic, beading cord elastic or 1/8” flat elastic

You Can Make Two Sizes: Adult and Child

  1. Put right sides of cotton fabric together
    • Cut 9” x 6” (adult)
    • Cut 7.5” x 5” (child)
  2. Start at the center of the bottom edge, sew to the first corner and stop. Sew the elastic with the edge out into the corner. A few stitches forward and back will hold this.
  3. Sew to the next corner, stop and bring the other end of the same elastic strip to the corner and sew a few stitches forward and back.
  4. Now sew across the top of the mask to the next corner. Again, put an elastic strip with the edge out.
  5. Sew to the next corner and sew in the other end of the same elastic strip.
  6. Sew across the bottom leaving about 1.5” or 2” open. Stop and cut the thread. Turn inside out.
  7. Pin three tucks on each side of the mask. Make sure the tucks are the same direction on both sides of the mask.
  8. Sew around the edge of the mask twice.

You can watch a video on making face masks on the Deaconess Health YouTube Page.

Thank You Cards

Mosaic caregivers can always use a word of encouragement and thanks, especially during this global pandemic.  We will distribute the cards to our caregivers to help boost their spirits during this difficult time.
